Project Caravan Travel Preparation Sheet
Vehicle
Maintenance
- Make sure your vehicle is in good running order. Get a tune-up, change the
oil, check the brakes and tires, replace the windshield wipers.
- Take a gallon container of water for the car.
- Join a roadside service club.
What
to take
- Food. Have a supply of healthy snacks (inc. peanut butter or a form of non-perishable
protein. Keep in mind many state borders do not allow fruits or vegetables to cross the state line.
- Drinking water.
- Emergency first-aid kit.
- Emergency car-care kit.
- Clothing, blankets. Be prepared for all weather.
- Road maps.
- Umbrellas or ponchos, just in case.
- Car chargers for electronics.
- Walkie-Talkies. Buy an inexpensive walkie-talkie to communicate with the
vehicles in the caravan.
- Extra items include: a tape recorder, camera, film.
- Audiobooks. Also, print the station list of your favorite radio show or radio
network (or make notes for the states we are traveling through.
Driving
Tips
- Follow the vehicle in front of you from a safe distance. Do not tailgate!
- We anticipate our average speed to be 55-60 mph. It will be slower over hills
and mountains.
- Allow vehicles to merge when they are getting on or off the freeway. If a
tractor-trailer truck needs to merge, this is the common procedure. If you differ from this procedure, you could cause
an accident! The truck turns on its blinker. ONLY when it is clear for the truck to begin merging, you turn your headlights
off/on, off/on. Do not flash highbeams – it will blind the driver! The truck will merge. If they flash their
lights after merging, they are saying “Thank you.” It is optional to flash one last time to say “You’re
welcome.”
- Fill your gas tank the night before each stop so we can leave promptly at 7am each morning.
- Be prepared for road construction, detours and impromptu protests against
us. If re-routing is necessary, the lead vehicles will be guided. Follow the caravan.
- Gas stops are planned at large truck stops with a lot of fuel. It is possible
they will run out. We have chosen stops with several stations, sometimes at more than one exit within a few miles range. Don’t
be afraid to use an unscheduled gas stop if you need gas!
- In some cities, we will be driving through city streets to pass the State
Capitol. Please print the city maps so you have the specific route, due to temporary breakups caused by traffic signals. While
this is not specifically a “parade” it will look like one. Travel the speed of the flow of traffic. In some cases,
this will be the opportunity for citizens from surrounding states to show their support instead of an actual rally. Expect
the streets to be lined with huge crowds.
REMEMBER: THIS IS A PEACEFUL CARAVAN! No road rage of any kind or violence-inciting behavior will be tolerated!
SPECIFIC ROUTE AND GAS STOPS WILL BE POSTED HERE BEGINNING
MONDAY, MAY 1, 2006
For all gas stops, you may use more than one station and more than one exit. This is
where the lead vehicles will be refueling and new drivers will be joining the caravan.
